Fractional CTO Cost — Rates, Retainers and What You Get

A plain-English guide for founders on what a fractional CTO costs, what they actually do, and how to tell whether you need one yet.

Fractional CTO cost is one of the first questions non-technical founders ask, usually right after "what does a fractional CTO even do?" The short version: you get senior technical leadership for part of the week instead of hiring a full-time executive, and you pay a fraction of the salary. The longer version depends on how much time you need, whether you want advice or hands-on building, and where your startup is.

This guide covers typical rates, pricing models, what's included and how to tell whether you need one yet.

What is a fractional CTO?

A fractional CTO is a senior technologist who works with your company part-time, often a few hours to a couple of days a week, acting as your chief technology officer. They make or guide the big technical decisions, so you don't have to guess.

Depending on your stage, that can mean:

  • Choosing what to build first and on which technology
  • Writing the MVP themselves, or leading the people who do
  • Hiring developers, including writing job descriptions, interviewing and setting pay
  • Reviewing an agency's or contractor's work to tell you whether it's on track
  • Answering investor and due-diligence questions about the product and architecture
  • Setting up security, hosting and processes so the product can scale

It's not the same as hiring a developer. A developer builds what they're told. A CTO decides what should be built, how, and what it should cost.

How much does a fractional CTO cost?

Published rates vary widely, and most come from firms and marketplaces that sell fractional CTO services, so treat them as benchmarks rather than quotes.

Monthly retainers

This is the most common model. Industry guides put ranges at:

  • Advisory (roughly 10–15 hours a month): about $4,000–$10,000 a month, according to talent marketplace A.Team.
  • Active, hands-on engagements (20–40 hours a month): about $10,000–$25,000 a month, per the same guide.
  • US market overall: one 2026 guide from Fractionus puts typical retainers at $9,000–$22,000 a month, with experienced CTOs at two to three days a week around $13,000–$16,000.
  • Lower-cost options: some providers quote mid-level fractional CTOs at around $3,000 a month.

Hourly rates

Many fractional CTOs don't bill hourly for ongoing work, but for short engagements, published benchmarks range from about $150 to $500 an hour, with senior US CTOs at the upper end.

Project-based pricing

For defined deliverables (an MVP plan, a technical audit, due diligence), guides quote anywhere from a few thousand dollars to $15,000–$75,000 or more for larger projects.

What 602 Group charges

We keep it simpler and sized for early-stage companies:

  • Project-based: from $2,500. A defined deliverable, such as an MVP, an audit or a roadmap, with fixed scope and a fixed price.
  • Part-time, ongoing: from $2,000 a month. A set number of days or hours each month, month to month, scaled up or down as you need.
  • Equity: for the right early-stage company, we're open to discussing equity, usually alongside cash.

Details are on our fractional CTO page.

Fractional CTO vs full-time CTO

A full-time CTO is a major hire. One industry guide cites an average US CTO salary of around $224,000, before equity, benefits and recruiting costs. For a pre-seed or seed-stage company, that's often a large share of the runway.

Fractional CTO Full-time CTO
Cost A few thousand to ~$25k/month Six-figure salary plus equity and benefits
Commitment Month to month or per project Long-term hire
Time Hours to days per week Full-time
Best for Pre-product to early traction Scaling team and product
Equity Optional, usually small Usually significant

The honest trade-off: a fractional CTO isn't fully embedded in your company. They won't be in every standup. For many early startups that's fine, because what you need is good decisions and a working product, not a full-time executive.

When does a startup need a fractional CTO?

You probably need one if:

  • You're a non-technical founder and can't tell which stack to use, which developers to hire or what a build should cost.
  • Your MVP is stuck. The build keeps slipping and you can't tell whether the team is on track.
  • You're hiring blind. You need developers but can't judge who's good or what to pay.
  • Investors are asking technical questions and you need someone who can answer them with confidence.
  • You're about to sign a big agency contract and want someone on your side reviewing scope and price.

You probably don't need one yet if you're still validating the idea with customer conversations and no product, or if you have a technical co-founder who's covering this well.

How to choose a fractional CTO

  1. Look for people who have shipped and run real products. Advice from someone who has built, launched and maintained a product is worth more than advice from someone who has only managed. Hunter, who leads our fractional CTO work, builds and runs Minnesota Lake Homes, a lakefront real-estate platform, end to end. You can see more of our work.
  2. Decide whether you need advice, building or both. Many founders need a hands-on builder early, then a leader as the team grows.
  3. Insist on clear scope. What will they deliver this month? How many hours or days?
  4. Check that you own everything. Code, accounts, cloud infrastructure and documentation should be in your company's name.
  5. Ask how they handle being part-time. Response times, communication channels and who covers emergencies.

What a good first 90 days looks like

  • Month one: understand the business, review anything already built, and produce a written roadmap and budget.
  • Month two: start the build or hire the team; set up hosting, security, code review and deployment.
  • Month three: ship something real to users, set up metrics and plan the next stage.

If your startup also needs internal tools or a customer database, that overlaps with our custom CRM and systems work.

FAQ

How much does a fractional CTO cost per month?

Published ranges run from about $3,000 to $25,000 a month depending on seniority and time. Ours start at $2,000 a month for part-time, ongoing work, or $2,500 for a defined project.

What's the hourly rate for a fractional CTO?

Benchmarks range from roughly $150 to $500 an hour, though many fractional CTOs prefer retainers or project pricing for ongoing work.

Is a fractional CTO worth it for an early-stage startup?

Often, yes. A few bad technical decisions early, such as the wrong agency, stack or hire, can cost far more than a part-time CTO.

Will a fractional CTO write code?

Some do and some only advise. We do either or both, depending on what your startup needs.

Can a fractional CTO help with fundraising?

They can't raise money for you, but they can make your technical story clear and prepare you for investor questions and due diligence.
